Regular old solid steel wedges can be a real pain to use. They very often will just bounce out of freshly cut wood, and the high pitched PING!!! of the steel hammer driving them is quite uncomfortable to the ears of the whole neighborhood. This striking also creates mushrooming of the wedge and hammer which can be quite dangerous as work hardened pieces can break off and fly into your legs or eyes. Not very fun.
On the flip side these wedges with a hardwood insert solve all the above issues. They are forged and ground very thin, easily biting into even fresh wood without bouncing out. Being driven with a wooden mallet they create no dangerous shrapnel effects and create a nice deep THONK! sound like a giant woodpecker deep in the forest.
They are forged with a laminated construction using mild steel for the body and a piece of thick tool steel forge welded in the center. Heat treated to be quite hard and resistant they are a joy to use.
These wedges would excel especially for green woodworkers who make riven furniture, bowls or spoons, as well as making fine felling wedges to direct trees and general splitting of those tough firewood rounds.
Each wedge comes with a hand crafted veg tanned leather sheath.
Wedges are roughly 2" wide and 12" long including the handle.
